Yet the heart becomes even more steadfast, Swamy.
And sleep only on the hard, bare ground.

Putting sorrow and worldly worries aside, I worship the Swami,
Chanting “Sharanam,” as though I am fighting this sacred battle.
Giving me your own name, you transformed me into Ayyappa,
Saying, “You are none other than me,” you bestowed upon me the sacred status of Swami.

Driving away hatred and uniting all distinctions of colour,
Within the discipline of wearing black, you filled that black colour with your divine presence.
This Mandala Deeksha is not a battle against an unseen enemy,
This Deeksha is the battle I fight against myself.

This Mandala Deeksha is not a battle against an unseen enemy,
This Deeksha is a sacred struggle against my own self.
Like an innocent child, pure as a clear flowing stream,
Wearing the sacred mala upon my heart, I surrender myself to the silent melody of devotion.
